Looking for the Best Heating Alternative When It Comes to Environmental Use? Propane is the answer.
Low carbon emissions. High efficiency. Versatility. It’s no small wonder that propane is a top heat source when it comes to environmental friendliness. Electricity and oil just don’t compare when it comes to the environmental safety factors inherent to propane gas.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the generation of electricity is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Fossil fuels and other harmful materials account for nearly 70% of those used in electricity production.

The EIA states that the following factors should be taken into account when comparing heating fuels:
- Efficiency
- Cost
- Availability
- Environmental issues connected to the consumption of the fuel
Let’s see how propane checks off each of these factors, and why, when it comes to environmental use, propane is the way to go.
Love the Environment? You’ll Love Propane
A picture of propane should be in the dictionary next to the definition of efficiency!
First, propane generates more heat. A gas furnace heated by propane, for example, heats air between 130- and 140-degrees. Comparably, an electric heat pump will heat air to about 98 degrees. Propane has more energy than natural gas: more than twice the BTUs (a measure of heating efficiency) in one cubic foot of propane compared to the same in natural gas.
Then there’s storage and delivery. Propane is more easily compressed into a transportable liquid than natural gas, and this also makes storage much easier.
The supply of propane is abundant. In the U.S., propane is produced and is more readily available than other forms of fuel, such as gasoline and diesel.
Through the price of propane can fluctuate, the cost is typically more favorable compared to electricity and heating oil.
Finally, when it comes to environmental use, propane comes out on top compared to all other heating fuels. Propane is NOT a greenhouse gas, thus there is no high levels of carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide spewed into the air when propane is burned.
Propane is also harmless to water and soil, as opposed to natural gas. In the event of a leak in an underground pipe, for instance, there would be no environmental impact with propane as compared to heating oil.
